{"id":585,"date":"2018-09-02T17:25:37","date_gmt":"2018-09-02T17:25:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/greta.cc\/?p=585"},"modified":"2018-09-03T15:25:26","modified_gmt":"2018-09-03T15:25:26","slug":"wikimania-2018-cape-town-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/greta.cc\/?p=585","title":{"rendered":"Wikimania 2018 &#8211; Cape Town, South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>BRIDGING KNOWLEDGE GAPS: THE UBUNTU WAY FORWARD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wikimania is the biggest gathering of Wikimedians in the world.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight:400;\">The theme of Wikimania 2018 was, \u201cBridging knowledge gaps\u2014the Ubuntu way forward\u201d. Here <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"><i>Ubuntu<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> doesn\u2019t refer to Operating System Ubuntu. Ubuntu, according to South African philosophy means, \u201chumanity towards others\u201dor as often translated \u201cI am because you are.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ubuntu_philosophy\">[1]<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight:400;\">When I first read the theme about this year Wikimania, the first thing that popped on my mind was \u201cMaybe the way Ubuntu was founded or created, was similar to Wikimedia,\u201d then I read the story behind the theme and I thought that \u2013 It is unforgivable that me as a Ubuntu fan at least for the last 5 years, not to know the meaning of the name behind it!<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight:400;\">My Wikimania 2018 journey started<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> one year ago, when my Canadian Visa for Wikimania 2017 was refused.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Wikimedia Foundation decided that all scholarship recipients who could not make it to Montreal because of visa issues, could use their scholarship for the next Wikimania in Cape Town.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> The only thing stopping me from Wikimania 2018 was again, another visa application \ud83d\ude42 which this time was successful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Since I already had a scholarship, I decided to be part of the Scholarship Committee to help select the scholarship recipients for this year, which its self was an interesting experience.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight:400;\">I arrived in Cape Town on 16th July and had some time before the event to see a bit around. With my two Albanian firends, Jona and Liridon started our sightseeing with a small tour around the city where our tour guide told us interesting facts about the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">parts of the city <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">we visited like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bo-Kaap\">Bo-Kaap<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> \u2013 traditionally a multicultural area, known for its brightly coloured homes and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cobble_stone\">cobble stoned<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> streets.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight:400;\">I regretted right away for not <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">extending my stay for a few more days<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> after the event since there was so much to see and do there.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Jona, Liridon, Faith and myself hiked the table mountain the next day. According to the guide it was a 2h30min hike. But I managed to do it in 1h23min. The bus was a bit expensive but was the safest and the fastest choice. CC.SA.4.0 Margott<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/greta.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/800px-Capetownlightinghouse.jpg?resize=692%2C519\" width=\"692\" height=\"519\"  data-recalc-dims=\"1\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Different from other events I\u2019ve <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">attended<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">, this time I wrote a small agenda with the sessions that I must attend and get more specific knowledge rather than general knowledge, and I stuck (almost) strictly to that. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">I had many questions; those to be answers from a session; and those that only 1:1 conversations with someone involved in a certain project could provide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">There were two days of pre-conference and the actual conference days began on 20 July with a beautiful opening ceremony. After that, I had to jump from one talk to another, learning a lot of things and trying to make new friends. I learned new things, but <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">didn&#8217;t <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">make many new wikifriends, not sure why, maybe I\u2019m losing my socialize skills :P.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I was part of many talks during Wikimania, but the next one was a bit special &#8211; <span style=\"font-weight:400;\">During the <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/wikimania2018.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/Program\/Coolest_Projects_of_Wikimedia_Chapters_-_Be_Inspired\">Coolest Projects of Wikimedia Chapters \u2013 Be Inspired <\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">session, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">WikiGap was selected the coolest project of 2018.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/meta.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/WikiGap\">WikiGap<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> was a worldwide event initiated by Wikimedia Sweden in collaboration with Local Wikimedia Affliates and Swedish embassies. I was one of the co-organizers for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sq.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:WikiGap\/Shqip%C3%ABri\">WikiGap Albania<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">, so when Deror asked:- \u201cDo we have someone here from the Wikigap?\u201d I raised my hand and he asked me to join him to the stage and accept the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"><i>prize. <\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">What he really wanted was actually someone from Wikimedia Sweden :). My main goal was to know how to work with institutions that are the main <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">resource <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">of information, and how <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/meta.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/Wikimedians_of_Albanian_Language_User_Group\">our Albanian User Group<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> can help Albanian institutions to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">digitise <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">their content in Public Licences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>While all the different sessions were ongoing on the 2nd and 3rd floor, a special session was happening on the last floor &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/wikimania2018.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/Wikimedia_2030\">Wikimedia Movement Strategic Process 2030.<\/a> For 3 days, the strategic team worked on the direction: Service and Equity. By 2030, Wikimedia will become <b>the essential infrastructure of the ecosystem of free knowledge<\/b>, and anyone who shares Wikimedia vision will be able to join it.
