After 2 years of trying to participate <\/span>in<\/span> CCC, <\/span>I <\/span>finally made it, at the 33<\/span>rd<\/span> edition! This year everything started when my\u00a0<\/span>friend from FSFE, Erik<\/a><\/span>, invited me to have a talk about W<\/span>ikidata <\/span>at<\/span> the<\/span> FSFE assembly<\/a> <\/span>happening there. So this was my chance to finally make it to CCC. And with my friend Jan<\/a>,<\/span> \u00a0we\u00a0<\/span>applied for\u00a0<\/span>another talk <\/span>on\u00a0<\/span>gender diversity <\/span>i<\/span>n free software.<\/span><\/p>\n

I thought <\/span>I had<\/span> been <\/span>to<\/span> many conference<\/span>s<\/span> and s<\/span>aw<\/span> everything that a conference can offer<\/span>.<\/span> B<\/span>ut this<\/span> \u2026<\/span> this was another level. Probably the best organized mass event in <\/span>the <\/span>universe. So many great talks, so many parallel tracks<\/span>,<\/span> so l<\/span>ittle<\/span> time. CCC this year opened the door to around 10.000 hackers, people interested in privacy and computer security, activists, makers et<\/span>c<\/span>. The motto of this congress was \u201cworks for me\u201d\u00a0 which is meant as a critical nudge towards developers who stop after technology works for them, while it should work for everyone.<\/span><\/div>\n
This congress is a huge gathering of people to share information, talk and party. The event also has a large un-conference part, hacking spaces, and lounge areas, which was the place <\/span>where I<\/span> spen<\/span>t<\/span> most of the time. Electronics everywhere<\/span>,<\/span> decorated nicely, and after the second day, the outside world simply starts to fade and congress becomes the new reality.<\/span><\/div>\n

My talks were on<\/span> the<\/span> 2nd and 3rd day, so <\/span>I<\/span> had<\/span> a<\/span> stress<\/span>-free<\/span> day<\/span> in the beginning<\/span> to enjoy the congress. <\/span>Directly the <\/span>first people I met were my friends from BalCCon and my Wiki friends from Germany.<\/span><\/div>\n
Then on the second day I gave my talk on <\/span>Wikidata (slides<\/a>). Daniel <\/a><\/span><\/span>and me <\/span>decided to merge our talks and to host a 2<\/span>-hour<\/span> talk\/workshop about Wikidata. What surprised us both was the<\/span> number of<\/span> people <\/span>attending<\/span> our talk and both of us immediately regretted not asking for a bigger room. <\/span>T<\/span>he talk went quite <\/span>well! W<\/span>e could have worked a bit more on w<\/span>ho would say which parts<\/span>, in order to cover as much as information that we could in those 2<\/span>hours. B<\/span>ut <\/span>the <\/span>participants <\/span>asked<\/span> some good questions so <\/span>I<\/span> think the result was good.<\/span><\/div>\n

And after th<\/span>e<\/span> talk<\/span> I had<\/span> a Wikidata game challenge with Silvan and <\/span>I have<\/span>\u00a0to teach Tomas \u00a0from FSFE how to learn Greek using <\/span>Wiktionary and Wikidata.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

My second talk <\/span>(<\/span>co-hosted with Jan<\/a><\/span><\/span>-Christoph Borchardt)<\/span>, was as crowded as the first one but the room was bigger so no need to sit on the ground<\/span>.<\/span> \ud83d\ude42<\/span><\/div>\n
We presented on <\/span>Gender Diversity <\/span>i<\/span>n Free Software (slides<\/a><\/span>)<\/span>. And giving the talk, it was clear to me <\/span>that <\/span>there <\/span>should be more people t<\/span>alking<\/span> about gender diversity <\/span>i<\/span>n free\/open software. At 33C3 <\/span>I<\/span> only found <\/span>one<\/span> other talk dedicated to gender diversity (<\/span>although I <\/span>hope <\/span>I<\/span> missed one <\/span>in<\/span> the agenda)<\/span>:<\/span>\u00bb<\/span>Making Technology Inclusive Through Papercraft and Sound<\/span>\u00ab \u2013 a<\/span>nd there were so many people talking about everything else but this issue. We’re missing <\/span>a<\/span> real problem here. Can we make computer education more gender-inclusive?<\/span><\/div>\n

There are many things I like to improve when giving a talk, and the first one to do is hosting more talks <\/span>and<\/span> workshops.<\/span><\/div>\n
